The freedom train was not a train at all, it was a path for slaves to find their freedom! One of the conductor’s names was Harriet Tubman. When she was a young girl her nickname was Minty. As a young girl she spun thread, if the thread broke she got whipped. She was a very brave and courageous woman. She helped a runaway slave from a slave hunter. While in progress the slave hunter threw a brick and got hit in the head. She suffered from blackouts the rest of her life. Later on she got married to a man who wanted slavery. She ran away from her husband and finally, after a few weeks she reached freedom. She thought that it would be crued to leave her family so she went back and helped her family reach freedom. She still thought that this was not enough so she went back again and again to help others. The Underground Railroad lasted for 40 years. It was through 1850 and 1890. During the Underground Railroad if slaves were tired then they got whipped. The slave owners always kept a pistol near their bedside. If slaves made attempt to run away then they were severely punished-perhaps even execution. When the slaves wanted to run away they made attempt to do so during Christmas time or during special holidays.
